1. Study the kind of job you are applying for.

2. Ask yourself what information about you and your background would be most important to an employer.

The most important thing is to make sure that your resume is:-

  • Attractive
  • Well organized
  • Easy to read
  • Free of errors
  • A common format contains:
  1. Heading
  2. Personal details
  3. Employment objective
  4. Education
  5. Employment experience
  6. References

  • Write [Name, address, telephone number and e-mail ID] centerd on the page.
  • Use formatting conventions like underlining, bold, different, font size, spacing to make it appear like a heading.
  • Do not include a date or you will have to keep changing it.

Personal details:-

  • It includes details of age, sex, marital status, race and religion.
  • See yourself from the eyes of the employer and provide whatever information that would honestly and effectively represent you.

Employment objective:-

State not only your immediate employment objective but the direction you hope your career will take. For ex:- “ a position that allows me to use my communication skills and computer science training.”

  • It enables the employer to identify your purpose quickly.
  • Exclude if you do not have a clear objective.


  • Select which is stronger in your background between education and experience.
  • If both are strong then list education first.
  • If you have one or more years of job experience,then list experience first.
  • For both education and work experience move from the most recent down sequence.
  • List activities and honors. For ex:- knowledge of foreign language, writing and editing, etc
  • Be selective, do not repeat information.

Employment experience:-

  • Starting with the most recent and working backwards, list all your full time, part time and temporary jobs.
  • Provide brief descriptions of your duties if they are similar to the job you are applying for.
  • Specify any promotion or award if any.


  • State—‘will be furnished upon request.’
  • Do not give anyone as a reference without first obtaining his/ her permission.
